The Saint Louis Rey cigar company actually started as “San Luis Rey“. It is believed to be based on a reference to the 1927 novel by Thorton Wilder, the bridge of San Luis Rey. The company itself was first registered in Cuba but in 1940, the name, Saint Luis Rey, was registered by two English tobacco importers. On September 15, 1960, the Saint Luis Rey factory and its assets were nationalized by the Cuban government. From 1960 until 1992, the brand itself was marketed exclusively on the UK market. The brand today is produced in Havana at the Montoto factory where the cigar, Romeo y Julieta cigars are produced.

It is always interesting to see where a cigar company comes from. But now we’re going to get to the cigar itself. The Saint luis rey broadleaf, beautiful looking cigar with a mild aroma, excellent medium dark chocolate brown wrapper and box pressed. stunning display by saint luis rey.

A couple of downsides right off the bat, the endcap looks like it was poorly pieced together which is very disappointing considering the overall classic look at the cigar presents. Another downside is it is so big you need an oversized cutter just to clip the end to begin. But onto the cigar itself, the wrapper is a mild tasting Connecticut broadleaf. It is filled with Nicaraguan and Honduran tobacco‘s.

As far as the flavor profiles go, in the first third you can sense a light sprinkle of cedar with some mild earthtones And a hint of almonds. what an excellent combination of flavors this is. Now in the second third it gets interesting. The earth tones get darker and the almond flavor now taste like the almonds are toasted. That is an interesting twist. Not something I’ve ever experienced before. You can also start to taste a little bit of spice. As I move into the final third all of these flavors intensify but it becomes twice as bold. All of that but it’s still maintains a smooth draw. I would definitely say it was a good cigar at 6 to 7dollars apiece I will definitely keep a few on hand but I would also recommend if you purchase this cigar or any other cigar a bit size to get yourself a cigar cutter that can handle this beast. Or at least a cigar corkscrew. All in all I was decently pleased with the cigar.
